About the event

We're back on Thursday 18th April for our next DevOps Exchange London event, this time hosted by our good friends at Worldpay at their HQ in the City.

In our usual style, we will welcome to the stage 3 expert speakers as they talk us through the latest advancements and trends in the DevOps realm.

Thomas Haynes from ITV will kick-start the evening as we look back at ITV's Common platform journey on AWS over the past 10 years and how it has now evolved to its 3rd version (CPv3) as of late 2023.

Kubernetes Consultant and Trainer, Steve Wade will then share his unconventional journey from professional footballer to technology, specifically focusing on building self-service platforms for developers on Kubernetes.

Finally, Daniel Chiriches from our hosts at Worldpay will dive into how declarative configuration-based tools like Terraform, Helm, or Kubernetes Operators are reshaping DevOps practices and paving the way for more efficient, reliable and scalable infrastructure and software delivery.

Our usual format will be followed, with the 2 x 30 minute talks starting at 7pm. Refreshments and drinks will be available on the night, courtesy of Worldpay!

Please ensure that you RSVP as soon as possible to avoid missing out.

Agenda:

7:00pm: Thomas Haynes, Platform Engineer @ ITV "ITV’s Common Platform: 10 years old and still innovating"

The Common Platform has provided ITV’s developers with a cloud hosting and development platform on AWS for the last 10 years. During this time CP has continuously evolved, and late 2023 saw the successful launch of version 3 of the platform.

We will look back at the journey that the Platform has been on, before discussing the aims, rollout and achievements of CPv3, with its focus on balancing freedom with control - enabling effective developer self service without sacrificing best practice, reliability, security and operational excellence.

Bio: Tom has almost 10 years experience working in the Platform Engineering and DevOps space, having moved over from the world of Physics research. Since 2016 he has worked at ITV where he is now a Principal Platform Engineer in the Common Platform Team.

7:20pm: Steve Wade, Kubernetes Consultant and Trainer "From the Football Field to Kubernetes Fields: A Developer's Journey"

Join me as I share my unconventional journey from professional footballer to technology, specifically focusing on building self-service platforms for developers on Kubernetes. Key takeaways from my talk will include:

  • How the soft skills honed on the football field can be invaluable in the tech industry.
  • The resources, communities, and strategies that facilitated my transition and how you can leverage these in your career pivot.
  • An overview of Kubernetes, its significance in the modern cloud infrastructure, and why it's a game-changer for developing self-service platforms.
  • Insights into the design and implementation of self-service platforms on Kubernetes, focusing on developer experience, automation, and scalability.

Bio: Steve Wade was one of the founding engineers at KSOC, a Kubernetes security startup. Before his current role, Steve held Platform leadership roles at UnderWrite Me and Mettle. During these roles, he leveraged the concept of GitOps to provide self-service platforms to developers.

7:40pm: Daniel Chiriches, DevOps Lead Engineer @ Worldpay "Harnessing Declarative DevOps for Autonomous & Successful Teams"

Whether you're a DevOps practitioner, software engineer, or IT professional, this presentation offers valuable insights into how declarative configuration-based tools like Terraform, Helm, or Kubernetes Operators are reshaping DevOps practices and paving the way for more efficient, reliable and scalable infrastructure and software delivery.

With over 15 years of experience in the technology industry, I've dedicated the past three years to specialising in the Cloud engineering domain. During this time, I've had the privilege of working closely with all three major cloud providers, gaining valuable insights and expertise in their respective platforms.

We hope that you can join us for this event!
