DevOps Exchange October blog - Natwest, Amach, AWS

Last night, we hosted our second event this month, hosted tby AWS, in a hidden gem in the heart of Shoreditch. Thank you to everyone who took time out of their evening to join us!

The evening brought fresh Cloud and DevOps insights from three leaders in the community. Elle Tahmasebi from Natwest kicked off with GraphQL innovation, followed by Rob Lazzurs from Amach, who delved into applying proven cloud management practices to effectively manage platforms like Databricks. Finally, Shalabh Srivastava unlocked the potential of Amazon Q, showcasing how to optimize workflows with cutting-edge tools for intelligent application development.

Ellie Tamesabi, Software Engineer at Natwest kick off the evening with an in-depth look at GraphQL, focusing on its core concepts, key features, and how it compares to REST APIs.

Ellie explained how GraphQL offers developers flexibility in data retrieval by allowing client-specified queries, reducing over-fetching, and consolidating multiple API calls into a single request. She highlighted GraphQL's efficiency, flexibility, and its increasing popularity among developers for building modern, complex applications.

Next up, we welcomed to the stage Rob Lazzurs, CTO at Amach. Rob's talk focused on how to manage modern data platforms like Databricks with proven cloud management practices.

He emphasised the limitations of "ClickOps," stressing that businesses cannot rely on individual decision-making in such environments, and introduced tools like GitOps and Terraform to manage cloud environments and infrastructure-as-code practices effectively. The talk covered practical steps using AWS Workspaces and S3 storage modules, highlighting the importance of maintaining version control and a structured, scalable approach to data platform management.

Finally, Shalabh Srivastava, a Principal Consultant from our hosts at AWS concluded the evening with his talk which provided insights and best practices to optimise development using Amazon Q Developer.

Key topics which were discussed include AI-powered inline code completion, seamless IDE integration, and the effective use of context to improve code suggestions and unit test generation. He also highlighted the importance of natural language interaction with Q Developer Chat for debugging, refactoring, and enhancing code quality.

Thank you to all of our speakers for their insightful talks and to AWS for hosting the event. We also extend our thanks to everyone who contributed to making it a success!
