Thank you to everyone who joined us for our official last event of 2023, which was a virtual 'American special' event. We ended the year with a bang as we welcomed 5 speakers who shared 3 fantastic talks; Lachlan Holmes at FirstHx, tech enthusiast Adriana Villela - Sr. Developer Advocate at ServiceNow Cloud Observability and Hannah Maxwell and finally Matt LeBlanc at Avesha and Hart Ripley at MOBIA.
As always, for those of you who missed the virtual event, we have provided a short synopsis from each talk with a direct link to the recording so that you can catch up on what you missed. Finally, thank you to every single one of you for your support this year. We will be back in the New Year, so keep your eyes peeled across all Meetup groups for your next local DevOps Exchange event.
Lachlan Holmes, Chief Technology Officer @ FirstHx
"Implementing SRE from scratch"
First up, we welcomed Lachlan from FirstHx, a clinician-led company that helps address a critical stage of the healthcare journey by empowering patients to share their medical story to the healthcare team.
Lachlan's talk dived into the journey of implementing SRE from scratch. He guided us through 'what is observability?', its 3 main pillars; logging, metrics, traces and how FirstHx approached this using various methods including using technique Load Balancing and APM Monitoring tools.
A key point he also suggests is "treat your servers like cattle, not pets" meaning that you don't want to tweak your servers over the course of a lifetime...
Adriana Villela - Sr. Developer Advocate at ServiceNow and Hannah Maxwell
"Discover the surprising connection between baking and coding!"
For our second talk, Software Engineer Adriana and her baking-savvy daughter Hannah explored the parrallels between baking and coding.
They explored the frustration behind the troubleshooting process, but highlighted the significant importance in being persistent, always reading the manual and trying to understand exactly why things are not working, when it comes to coding.
A truely brilliant take on why there should never be 'too many cooks in the kitchen' when coding/baking...
Matt LeBlanc, Senior System Engineer @ Avesha
Hart Ripley, Solutions Architect @ MOBIA
"Migrating PacMan to another Cluster/Cloud"
Last, but certainly not least, we rounded up our last event of 2023 with a talk from Matt and Hart who explained exactly why partners Avesha and MOBIA use Cloud Native platform, Kubeslice to securely connect, manage and monitor connectivity to clusters across any Cloud and/or On Prem.
In this talk, the pair dived into how they share data across clusters, cloud and datacenters including; setting up VPC peering, creating inbound rules and setting up Load Balancing.
