About the event

Manchester, it's been a while but we're back!

Join us for DOXMAN on Wednesday 16th November at SciTech provider Bruntwood's HQ in the heart of Manchester. This month we'll be joined by Matt, an Istio expert at Tetrate, Qara, a Senior DevOps Engineer at KPMG and Martyn, a Principal Software Architect at D55.

The usual format will be followed, with 3 x 20 minute talks, followed by refreshments, pizza and the usual continued discussion about all things DevOps! Doors open at 6:30pm and the talks will start at 7pm sharp.

Full agenda below and we look forward to hosting you on the 16th.

Talk 1.

Qara Aslam, Senior DevOps Engineer @ KPMG

"Separating out database development features."

A talk on the ways of devops working with database developers. Qara and her team have created a solution to automate to deploy changes through code rather than directly to a database.

Qara graduated, and started her first role as a Junior DevOps Engineer at TalkTalk, which was primarily focussed on automation and developing/hosting sites. She continued to work within the same field, but moved around between companies.

She started her job at KPMG in 2019, where she works as Senior DevOps Engineer managing multiple projects in the public sector using Azure and AWS.

Talk 2.

Matt Turner, Software Engineer @ Tetrate

"Gateway APIs and API Gateways - modern ingress demystified."

Up until now, Ingress routes into K8s clusters have been defined by the Ingress kind, or by vendor-specific CRDs. Neither of these were satisfactory, so a new set of built-in k8s APIs was developed - the Gateway API. In this talk, Matt will cover the motivation for a new API, its design, and show some examples of its use. He’ll then also cover implimentations of it today and in the future, and talk about the exciting merging of several of the existing ingress controllers into one new de facto standard - Envoy Gateway.

Matt is a software engineer at Tetrate, working on Istio-related products, and loves sharing the latest tech and trends with everyone. He's been doing Dev, sometimes with added Ops, for over a decade. His idea of "full-stack" is Linux, Kubernetes, and now Istio too. He's given many talks and workshops on Kubernetes and Istio, and is co-organiser of the Istio London meetup. He tweets @mt165 and blogs at [https://mt165.co.uk](https://mt165.co.uk/)

Talk 3.

Martyn Kilbryde, Principal Software Architect @ D55

"A Dev Environment Per Branch with CDK."

Infrastructure as Code (IaC) is an important part of Cloud Infrastructure, by utilising flexible cloud resources, preferably serverless, then it opens up the possibility of a pipeline to create a full Developer environment per Branch, and then destroy it again after the PR is merged. In this talk, we'll explore different patterns for achieving this, along with lessons learned and gotchas from a team that uses this pattern extensively.

Martyn Kilbryde is an experienced Software Architect working at D55, an AWS consulting partner specialising in cloud-native and serverless technologies. He has many years' experience working with global highly transactional and public-facing applications.

We look forward to seeing you all!

All the best,

DevOps Exchange Manchester
